Comments: Editor's note: This tree died soon after it was nominated. Sadly, this massive tree is no longer standing. This is the largest tree in Virginia, believed to be in excess of 1,500 years old. The tree, and the old-growth cypress-tupelo swamp of which it is a part, was discovered in 2005 by Byron Carmean and Gary Fleming.
