Common Name: dwarf hackberry
Scientific Name: Celtis pumila
Category: Champion (big) tree
Comments: Recenty nominated for state champion status, this exceptionally large Dwarf Hackberry is almost twice the size of the current champion and only 7 pts. off from the National Champion. It is growing on a narrow wooded buffer between an elementary school and an apartment complex in a highly urbanized corridor in northern Virginia. It's tenacity in surviving the urban growth around it is admirable.
