A Remarkable white oak

Tree Information

Common Name: white oak

Scientific Name: Quercus alba

Category: Historic tree

Comments: This Oak tree is located on the property that was once the home of Colonel William and Susanna Smith Preston. The Prestons built their home c. 1774, which remained in the family for five generations. It is now listed as a Virginia Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places. The oak tree stands to the south (front) of the house in the now cultivated fields belonging to Virginia Tech. Although it has not been scientifically dated for age, we believe it is one of the oldest trees associated with this site and the Preston Family. It has survived in a field that has been cultivated for over 30 years and stands among the corn each summer. The tree measures 17 feet in girth (DBH) and has a crown width of approximately 67 feet. It was called the "Merry Oak" in a story related to Smithfield in one of the old Bugles.

Best time to photograph: early morning or late afternoon, either summer or winter
