Comments: This tree is known as one of the Royal Oaks of Marion, and is believed to be the oldest oak tree in in the town. Once known as Royal Oak, the Town of Marion celebrated the sesquicentenial by selecting three trees that best represented the town. The trees were dedicated with a plaque on July 4, 2000. The Town of Marion became an official Tree City USA in 2002. Behind the tree is the gravesite of an unamed Indian girl. Many school children from nearby Marion Primary School have visited the gravesite and written essays on how they imagined the life of this little girl. Their teacher, Evelyn Lawrence, can be seen in the picture, below, looking for the now lost gravesite. The tree has a circumference of 16 ft. 9 in.
