Common Name: southern magnolia
Scientific Name: Magnolia grandiflora
Category: Unique tree
Comments: At the urging of several friends, I'm submitting our remarkable magnolia tree for your Trees of Virginia project. Our house was built in 1920, and I believe the magnolia was planted at about the same time. This magnolia has a canopy of 57 feet and a mulitude of large sprouted trunks. Kids are fascinated by it. It is as if the tree possesses a magnet. You can see this for yourself in the attached photo of my son's kindergarten class picnic where 19 boys are happily playing either in or around the tree.
