A Remarkable white oak

Tree Information

Common Name: white oak

Scientific Name: Quercus alba

Category: Historic tree

Comments: Now deceased. This tree, located in the southwest Virginia town of Marion, is known as Sallie's Crying Tree. The tree served as the lone friend and mentor of a little slave girl who lost her family members when they were sold to a Lynchburg slave owner in the 1840's. Sallie's legacy is marked to this day by many descendants who have excelled in brick masonry, government, cartography, business, education and technology. Sallie was one of the founders of Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church, a religious group that shaped positively the lives of most of Marion's African-American youth and children. The tree was recognized at the town's sesquicentennial celebration, July 4, 2000. Submitted by Sallie's grand-daughter, Evelyn T. Lawrence, African Ameican Historian. The picture below shows the mayor of Marion, David Helms, at right, admiring the tree.
