A Remarkable white oak

Tree Information

Common Name: white oak

Scientific Name: Quercus alba

Category: Historic tree

Comments: No list of remarkable trees in Virginia could possibly be complete without a trip to Bruington Baptist Church in King and Queen County. Constituted over 200 years ago Bruington has played an important role in early Baptist history in Virginia. With a seating capacity of 500, this rural church is not a small structure. The current building is nearly 160 years old, and standing in front of it like a sentinel is a giant oak. I have vivid memories of running around the base of this tree when I was a child, as do many kids who have grown up in the area. Rarely does a tree become so closely intertwined with the community. This old oak is like a friend who brings shade and beauty. It is truly a marvelous old tree.
