A Remarkable white oak

Tree Information

Common Name: white oak

Scientific Name: Quercus alba

Category: Community tree

Comments: This is a white oak tree at Seay's Chapel United Methodist Church, Shores VA. The tree is over 150-200 years old, we believe, and stands just in front of our Church. The tree is pictured in a historic photograph and is featured in a book, Safe Shores, about my family's history in Shores, Fluvanna County VA. My Great Great Grandparents, Great Grandparents and Parents played over and around its roots & beneath its shady branches. It is a lovely tree. So many generations have been soothed by its benevolent shade during many homecoming feasts, church weddings, funerals, etc. Each time my husband and I go to church, which in our case is each 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month, as it is a small one room church built in 1892, I always feel I am being greeted by an old friend. That is what this tree means to me. This is the poem I included on the first page of Chapter 4 regarding our feelings for this tree.. Not Only God Keeps Watch Over Our Church It Is Blessed With Yet Another Friend Fo

Best time to photograph: Early morning or afternoon I think, in the spring or summer

Nominator: Mrs. Shirley J. Wilkins
