Common Name: mountain laurel
Scientific Name: Kalmia latifolia
Category: Champion (big) tree
Comments: This tree was first described in 1938 by an Appalachian Trail hiker and was featured in articles of the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club in 1973. Soon thereafter a group of PATC members dedicated themsleves to finding and protecting the tree. In 1993 one of the group hiked to Old Rag, endured a spring blizzard, and remarkably survived to tell a story that involved snow shoes, cross-county skis, and a delightful weekend at Corbin Cabin. The tree was remeasured in 2006 and is the current state champion mountain laurel. The tree is 22 ft. tall, the trunk of which is visible in the picture.
