Common Name: white oak
Scientific Name: Quercus alba
Category: Champion (big) tree
Comments: This tree stands on the front corner of my property very close to Glade Rd in Blacksburg. As much as one can own anything this grand I 'own' the old man I call Bertram. See the 8' ladder propped against, or the utility pole for a sense of scale. My neighbors have farmed their property for over 200 years and I suspect Bertram was here to see the farm getting started. He stands next to the farm property with one long branch (and several others) extending over the fence. I am 5'8" and cannot get my arms even 1/3 around the trunk of this tree. I suspect Bertram could be recognized in several categories......he's huge, likely very old, extremely beautiful and if he could talk he'd have some history to share!
Best time to photograph: winter if you want to see the grand structure, summer/fall if you want to see him leafed out
