A Remarkable red mulberry

Tree Information

Common Name: red mulberry

Scientific Name: Morus rubra

Category: Other

Comments: This is an old tree, but its real significance is that hundreds of children climb on it each year at the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond. It now sits in the middle of the Children's Garden, which is visited by school groups and others from all over the state. It's like a magnet--often with a dozen or more children climbing on it all at one time! Kids say it's the best part of the Children's Garden.

Dendrology Notes: This is most likely a white mulberru, not a red mulberry.

Best time to photograph: when kids are on it! contact Beth Monroe, Director of Publicity at the Garden to organize. 804-262-9887

Nominator: Grace Ann Hugo (via her grandmother, Nancy!)
