The Stream Study is material developed by the Save Our Streams (SOS) Program of the Izaak Walton League of America. This site includes an Identification key to help you identify which critter is which and it includes an indicator of how sensitive each macroinvertebrate is helping you to determine water quality. It has a link to why study the stream-bottom macroinvertebrates.

Download the SOS Field Data worksheet (pdf file). Includes a checklist for how to collect data, color bug IDs, calculations with examples, and habitat detail information. To be an official monitor, you must pass a certification process with Va SOS. See their website for details.
