Leaf: Alternate, simple, ovate to lanceolate, sessile or on very short petioles, pubescent above and below with prominent veins; margins finely serrate or ciliate; often with small stipular leaves at the leaf base.
Flower: Species is monoecious; yellow to pale yellow and showy, up to 1 1/2 inch wide with 4 (sometimes 6) rounded petals; borne singly in the leaf axils; appearing primarily in late summer.
Fruit: A boxy brown capsule 1/2 to 1 inch long.
Twig: Hairy and green when young, ridged; buds green to brown and ovoid.
Bark: Long, shreddy peeling strips, green to gray-brown.
Form: A semi-woody multi-stem suckering shrub to 12 feet tall.
