blackjack oak Quercus marilandica

Blackjack oak is a small tree of dry sites. It is a tough tree that provides food for wildlife and fuelwood where other trees can't grow.

Light
Blackjack oak is rarely intentionally regenerated.

Water
A southern tree found on infertile, dry sites. Usually on sandy soils but it may be found on clays.

Growth

Size
A small sized tree (20 to 30 feet tall) generally with poor form. It typically has a short trunk with a round crown made up of twisted limbs.

Timber Value
Too small to be a commercial timber tree, blackjack oak does yield excellent firewood.

Wildlife Value
Acorn crops are produced early, and can be very important food sources on relativey barren sites.

Fun Facts
The wood of blackjack oak is heavy and hard but because of its generally poor form it has little commercial use. It is used locally for rough lumber. It is an important component of southern pine-oak ecosystems.
