Leaf:Alternate, simple, deciduous, ovate to lanceolate, entire margins, to 9 inches; shiny dark green above, gray tomentose below.
Flower:Species is dioecious, both male and female borne on catkins to 1 1/2 inch long; appearing in early spring, before the leaves.
Fruit:A light brown leathery drupe to 3/4 inch long.
Twig:Gray-brown and pubescent, with yellow-brown scaly buds.
Bark:Dark brown with prominent lenticels.
Form:A large suckering shrub or small tree to 25 feet, often in thickets.
