Reseeding

A skid trail is an earthen trail pushed out in the woods that the loggers use to drag the cut trees from the stump to the deck where they will be loaded on trucks to go to the mill. Skid trails are major sources of erosion on a harvesting site, therefore it is important to do everything possible to prevent erosion once the loggers are done on the site. Reseeding the skid trails and the decks with grass seed is one easy way to prevent erosion. The roots of the plants help hold the soil in place.

Another good way to prevent erosion on skid trails is to place water bars on them. Water bars are mounds of dirt put across skid trails at angles to slow the water down and to cause it to run off to the side rather than straight down the trail. Basically, a water bar is a speed bump for water. The water bar in this picture is located at the lower right corner.
