Tree Life Cycle Stages


The US Forest Service and the Virginia Department of Forestry conduct a forest inventory of Virginia. They recognize the following tree life cycle stages:

Seedlings/sprouts- trees < 1inch stem diameter
Saplings- trees 1-5 inches diameter at breast height (DBH)
Mature or Timber Trees
Poletimber- 5-11inches DBH for hardwoods; 5-9 inches dbh for conifers
Sawtimber- live trees with DBH greater than poletimber size
Snags- standing dead trees
Rotting logs
