January - maple and birch sap flows on warm days

February - sap flow continues, elms and red maple begin to bloom at end of month; leaf buds break on willow

March - sap flow ends; flowering begins for maples, spicebush, alder, bigtooth aspen, boxelder; leaf buds break on black cherry, boxelder, dogwood, multiflora rose and blackberry

April - flowering begins for shadbush, hackberry, holly; leaf buds break on tulip tree early in the month; most other trees follow a few weeks later

May - flowering begins for tulip tree, black cherry and oaks

June - flowering begins for catalpa, persimmon and basswood

July - flowering begins for southern magnolia
