black oak (Quercus velutina)

This mature black oak, like the clump of black locusts nearby, may be in decline. Looking up into the canopy this winter I noticed a few very large branches wedged dangerously amongst other, still-living branches. STAY AWAY FROM THIS TREE DURING STORMS! Aside from these potentially dangerous hanging branches, this is a great oak specimen. To compare this oak with the nearby black locusts again, while locusts are very fast growing and short-lived, oaks in general a very slow growing and considerably longer lived than locusts - 200 years or more would be average.
