HOW TO MAKE A WATERSHED
MODEL
- Use a shallow container
to resemble the boundary of the watershed
- Place newspaper in mounds
to signify mountains and this will also create outlines of a river in
the valley
- Tape clear plastic wrap
over the entire container so water will travel smoothly over the newspaper
formed ridges
- Use leaves from a plant
to resemble trees in the mountains (hemlock branches, maple or oak leaves)
and tape them to the plastic
- Use some other type of
plant material to resemble agricultural crops (rhododendron leaves,
grass clippings) and tape them to the plastic
- Use small objects to resemble
a town (monopoly pieces) and also tape them to the plastic
- Sprinkle coffee grounds
over watershed to signify soil particles and chemicals
- Spray water over the mountains
to assimilate rain
- The result is the presence
of coffee grounds traveling into the river representing contamination
and pollution of our waters
