Leaf:Alternate (appear whorled along stems), evergreen, leathery, simple, lanceolate, spiny margins, 1 1/2 to 3 inches long, 1/2 inches wide, shiny green, turn bronze to red in fall.
Flower:Bright yellow, small (1/3 inch) in dense, round hanging clusters several inches across, appearing in early to mid-spring.
Fruit:Dark blue 1/4 to 1/3 inch long.
Twig:Slender to moderate, stiff with a long (1 to 2 inch) 3-parted spine at nodes, yellow inner bark.
Bark:Light brown with shallow rough texture; yellow inner bark.
Form:A dense shrub up to 6 to 8 feet tall, 2 to 4 feet wide.
