Fire Ecology

Due to fire suppression the longleaf pine ecosystem has been taken over by hardwood species and some pine species. Longleaf pine use to be found over an area of 90 million acres and now it can only be found in about 2 million acres. This is due to fire suppression and human development.

The Native range of longleaf pine use to be 90 million acres.

The right side of the picture is a longleaf pine stand with frequent fires and to the left is a stand with out fires.

There is hope for longleaf pine as Foresters are using fire to bring back the longleaf pine ecosystems.
