How do
researchers catch a black bear?
There are two methods for catching black bears: leg snares
or culvert traps.
Leg snares are steel braided wire formed into a loop that tightens
around a bear’s leg. To set a snare,
first, you find somewhere that a bear is likely to step; such as in front of
bait or in a trail. Then you set the
snare in a large enough loop to go around a bear’s foot. Finally, you cover the loop with dirt and
leaves.
A culvert trap is a large steel tube that has a sliding
door on one end, much like a big box trap for raccoon. To set a one of these, set the culvert in an
area used by bears. Next, hang bait on
the trigger in the back of the trap.
Finally, set the door in the open position.
