Toumey oak Fagaceae Quercus toumeyi Sarg. symbol: QUTO2
Leaf: Alternate, nearly evergreen, simple, oblong to lanceolate, 1 inch long; margins are entire, with some small teeth near the tip, or with pronounced teeth; leathery and stiff; base is acute; pale blue to dull yellow-green to above, pale and fuzzy beneath.
Flower: Species is monoecious; males in long drooping catkins, yellow-green; females very small spikes in leaf axils, appearing in spring.
Fruit: Oblong acorn, 1/2 inch long, bowl shaped cap with warty scales, covers 1/3 of nut; sessile or borne on a very short stalk; ripens in 1 season in the fall.
Twig: Moderate to slender, light brown, covered in pale fuzz; clustered terminal buds; buds are small, reddish brown, and dome-shaped.
Bark: Dark gray, initially thin and lenticeled, becomes quite scaly.
Form: A nearly evergreen, shrub or small tree with a short trunk and a spreading, irregular crown of stout, twisted branches, reaches up to 25 feet tall.
Looks like: shrub live oak - Arizona white oak
