Harvest Types for Land Objectives
Contents

Timber harvesting is a tool available to landowners in order to provide them with money from their forestland. It is important to remember, though, that selection of a harvest type can impact much more than just the amount of money earned. Before undertaking any timber harvest, it is imperative that landowners consider their objectives for the management of their land. Only when a clear understanding of these objectives is achieved should a harvest type be selected.

As you work through the remainder of this instructional module, you will be introduced to a number of harvesting practices, all of which will have a different impact on the aesthetics of the stand, the wildlife benefits, and the long-term and short-term value. By looking at the panoramas, you will be able to determine whether the appearance of the stand after the harvest is suitable for your forest stand. Information on the monetary value and the wildlife benefits will be provided for each harvest type as well. Consider this information carefully in trying to assess which of the harvest practices might be best suited to meet the objectives you have set for your property.
